Original Content Takes Priority on Instagram

Instagram's latest algorithm update favors original content over duplicates.

Instagram is making some significant changes to how it recommends content, with a focus on originality and giving smaller accounts more visibility. The biggest change is aimed at aggregators—accounts that repost other users’ content without adding anything new. Instagram will start removing reposted content from recommendations across the platform. This change targets accounts that repost content they didn't create or enhance more than 10 times in 30 days. The platform will replace the reposted content with the original creator’s post in recommendations, but this only applies when the original is relatively new and when the system is confident that the posts are identical.

Creators will receive notifications when their original content is recommended in place of a repost. Instagram will also add a label crediting the original creator, but both the creator and the account reposting the content can remove the label. This change will affect a wide range of accounts, not just content mills stealing memes or images.

Instagram is also updating its recommendation system to give all creators an equal chance of reaching a wider audience. Previously, Reels were ranked based on how an account’s followers engaged with them, giving larger accounts more reach. To counteract this, Instagram will now test eligible content in small groups and then serve the top-performing Reels to a wider audience, giving smaller accounts a better chance of going viral.

These changes will be rolled out over the coming months and aim to address issues with reach and engagement on the platform. While they don't specifically target the problem of content visibility for creators, the emphasis on recommendation updates suggests that it will become even more important going forward.
